About Us
Since 1975, Vietnam has been entirely governed by the Communist Party of Vietnam. This has led to
significant restrictions on freedom of expression for writers and artists. The creative community is not
allowed to freely articulate the thoughts, feelings, and aspirations of the people, nor are they permitted
to celebrate the truth, goodness, and beauty inherent in human existence. Instead, all artistic endeavors
are expected to serve the interests of the Communist Party and uphold its governing position.
The media landscape in the country is dominated by over 700 newspapers, numerous radio and
television stations, and publishing houses, all of which are controlled by the party and state. Even
associations for writers and poets are subject to government oversight, dictating the content and
themes of their works. There exists no independent information agency in the private sector.
If individuals or organizations deviate from the guidelines set by the Communist Party, they face severe
punishment. In the North, two notable instances of such punishment occurred: the Nhan Vam Giai Pham
case and the Tram Hoa Dua No (Hundred Flowers Blooming Movement). During these episodes,
hundreds of writers and artists endured imprisonment, physical abuse, and the degradation of their
basic needs, leading to lives of suffering and mental anguish until their eventual demise. Similarly, in the
South, within a short span of time, over 160 writers, journalists, poets, playwrights, and filmmakers
were apprehended, incarcerated, and many perished behind bars.
In response to these oppressive conditions, a vibrant creative movement emerged overseas as writers
and artists sought refuge to pursue freedom. It was within this context that the Tieng Que Huong
Bookcase meaning \u201cThe Voice of the beloved country Bookcase\u201d came into existence. Founded by two
individuals who experienced firsthand the repression in Vietnam, journalist Tran Phong Vu, who fled to
the United States as a refugee in 1975, and Uyen Thao, who resettled in America in 1999 after enduring
more than a decade of imprisonment. They began publishing their own works in 2000, along with those
of their fellow exiles, as well as clandestinely obtained works created within Vietnam or within the
confines of prison, smuggling them abroad for dissemination.
To date, Tieng Que Huong Bookcase has produced over 100 works, each serving as a poignant reflection
of the anguish endured by those under the oppressive rule of the communist regime. These works
vividly depict the tragic realities of a nation plagued by the insatiable greed of its rulers and the
pervasive corruption that prioritizes wealth and power above all else.
All of these literary creations have been meticulously crafted into books. Now, recognizing the
importance of making these invaluable works more widely accessible and preserving them for posterity,
the policy committee of the Tieng Que Huong Bookcase has collaborated with the Vietnamese American
Heritage Foundation (VAHF) and the Vietnamese Literary & Artistic Club (VLAC), also known as Vietnam
House, to establish an online platform: the Voice of the Beloved Country Bookcase Cabinet, accessible
via the website www.vietbooks.org.
In the future, Vietbooks.org will continue to curate and publish select works contributed by friends and
allies, aiming to safeguard the literary treasures painstakingly forged by our ancestors’ generation. It is
our collective hope to honor the sweat, tears, and blood invested in creating these works and to impart
