No matter how meticulous, historical writings can still contain inaccuracies due to a lack of documents or knowledge. Regarding the Vietnam War, a conflict that hasn’t reached half a century since its end, many key figures are still alive, and newly accessible documents have only been partially unveiled.<\/span><\/p>\n

Utilizing these newly available documents and further expanding from the foundation of materials in American literature from the 1920s, Logevall, a professor of History and International Studies at Cornell University, boldly connects and supplements them with materials found in French, Russian, Chinese, British, and Vietnamese archives to reconstruct the policymaking journey of the United States during its intervention in Vietnam. When examining America’s intervention process, the majority of Vietnamese believe that it was a blind and colossal mistake.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most Americans also view America’s intervention in Vietnam as a colossal mistake but for entirely different reasons. However, rising above the perspectives of both sides, could the outcome of that intervention have been different?<\/span><\/p>\n

Logevall asserts “Yes.” Not only “Yes” at one point, but also “Yes,” “Yes,” and “Yes” at many points.<\/span><\/p>\n

If another title could be chosen for the book “Sacrificed Lives,” perhaps “How Americans View the Vietnam War” would be the most accurate. Logevall delves into the perspectives and preconceptions of one of America’s most prominent politicians, concluding with an epilogue on the politician’s sudden death while at the peak of his political career.<\/span><\/p>\n

One could also say he delves into the narrative through the deaths of other heroes like Peter Dewey, a wayward officer of the United States Office of Strategic Services (OSS), or James B. McGovern, a skilled pilot of the Flying Tigers squadron shot down at Dien Bien Phu, and concludes with the granite wall engraved with the names of 58,000 American soldiers who died in Vietnam<\/span><\/p>\n
